Answers to Commonly Asked Questions on S&C’s Award Winning TripSaver™ Dropout Recloser — Part I

This article provides additional details on S&C’s TripSaver™ Dropout Recloser by answering commonly asked questions about this exciting new product. It is the first in a four-part series.

Q. What is the construction of the TripSaver housing?

A. The lower housing is made of UV-resistant polycarbonate. The upper housing is made of glass-filled bulk molding compound, painted for heightened UV resistance.

Q. What is the interrupting medium?

A. TripSaver utilizes a vacuum fault interrupter similar to that furnished in Vista® Underground Distribution Switchgear.

Q. To which industry standards was TripSaver tested?

A. S&C tested TripSaver per C37.60-2003, “IEEE Standard Requirements for Overhead, Pad Mounted, Dry Vault, and Submersible Automatic Circuit Reclosers and Fault Interrupters for Alternating Current Systems up to 38 kV,” as well as the dielectric requirements of C37.41-2000, “IEEE Standard Design Tests for High-Voltage Fuses, Distribution Enclosed Single-Pole Air Switches, Fuse Disconnecting Switches, and Accessories.”

S&C also tested TripSaver per new IEC 62271-111, “High Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear Part 111: Overhead, pad-mounted, dry vault, and submersible automatic circuit reclosers and fault interrupters for alternating current systems up to 38 kV.”

TripSaver meets the requirements for reclosers having under-oil interrupters rated 4 kA, and those having vacuum fault interrupters rated 2 kA.

Q. What are the interrupting ratings for TripSaver?

A. Models with 100K-ampere control module, Catalog Number Suffix “-K100,” have an interrupting rating of 4000 amperes symmetrical. Models with 50K-ampere control module, Catalog Number Suffix “-K050,” have an interrupting rating of 2000 amperes symmetrical.

Q. How much does TripSaver weigh?

A. TripSaver weighs 20 pounds . . . light enough to be easily supported by a standard fuse cutout mounting.

Q. Can TripSaver be applied in a Type SMD-20 Power Fuse mounting?

A. No.
